Wednesday's editorial listed the unfortunate choices the Board of Trustees had made to send the presidential search toward an unfortunate end.
Since then, at least two have been corrected.
The Board of Trustees announced on Wednesday that another faculty member would be added to the presidential search committee. This didn't completely satisfy the faculty's complaints, because the faculty did not get to pick the new representative, but it was a start.
Then, Friday, Beverley Pitts was given the title of acting president.
This is good.
But since Wednesday's editorial, the Board has continued to insult the student body.
Wednesday's memo from the Board included a sentence that sums it all up: "We take faculty comments about the process seriously."
Apparently students are just expected to pay hefty tuition bills and go to class.
Tom DeWeese, president of the Board, said students are represented fairly. One vote to represent 18,000 people is what he considers fair.
Jayson Manship, president of the Student Government Association, has challenged the Board and DeWeese to add another student. Manship can't win without the help of the students he represents, though.
SGA senators have discussed rallies, like the one held to show support for a new student center, to show the Board that students want more representation. Sarah Atkinson, the student representative on the Board, will be attending this week's SGA senate meeting to listen to questions and comments from students.
To the SGA senators: Hold those rallies now, outside the administration building, so the vice presidents can tell the Board what they saw.
To club presidents and their members: Please, if you can come, be at the SGA senate meeting, just to show support. The next president can have an important influence on your organization (think sports cuts).
And, finally, to students: The president leads the university by determining its direction and priorities. The value and reputation of a Ball State education will be decided by Blaine Brownell's replacement. But because the Board doesn't respect or trust the students, the students will not get to help decide who that replacement will be.
SGA senate meets at 3:15 p.m. in Cardinal Hall on Wednesday. Don't let the Board of Trustees take away your voice.
Or, perhaps, we'll see you on the administration's lawn.^^>(-¦C
