OUR VIEW: Necessary separation

AT ISSUE: Christian group holds discussion on how gays are viewed in the Bible

The Constitution exists to protect Americans.

It is the supreme law of the land. It guides American life in many forms, from determining who is eligible to vote to how law enforcement can conduct legal searches.

It is also designed to protect the right of people to hold and express their own views.

The U.S. Constitution outlines that church and state are two separate entities able to function independent of one another.

If American law only adhered to the guidelines of one religious group, many people would feel ostracized.

It is important to preserve the separation between church and state because it allows Americans of all backgrounds and all faiths to function as people of one nation, regardless of their beliefs.

The same Constitution that requires separation of church and state by law also allows anyone to speak freely about any topic.

The Christian Student Foundation's Sunday evening discussion about how the Bible views homosexuality makes sense. It is an example of people exercising their freedom of speech rights while helping others who may not study the Bible or believe in its teachings to understand it.

Those willing to speak out and explain from where their religious views originate have that right. America is designed to let anyone speak about anything. The nation will not progress unless each view is heard and considered.

America is also designed to let anyone follow any faith, or no faith, if they choose, with no government intervention.

The same-sex marriage debate is an example of how important it is to make sure all voices are heard, especially those from different faiths.

Because America is called a melting pot of ideas, faiths and races, the teachings of no one belief system should be considered American law.
