MEN'S TRACK & FIELD Team travels to Indiana Invite

Panning looks to put up stronger showing in pole vault

The men's track and field team has been building up for this Friday's Indiana Invitational during its two-week break from competition.

The two-day meet will take place in Bloomington and includes teams such as Vanderbilt, Indiana State, Ohio State, Eastern Illinois, Miami (Ohio), Butler, Purdue, Louisville and the professional track team Indiana Invaders.

Facing several Mid-American Conference schools, limiting themselves to a 30-man roster and participating in their first scored meet of the season will prep the Cardinals for what they will see at the MAC Championships on Feb. 27.

"We're moving around some people in a couple different spots, but our approach is pretty much the same," coach Jermaine Jones said. "Basically this will give us a good look at what our MAC team will look like."

Seven individual members traveled last weekend to the Doug Raymond Invitational in Kent, Ohio: freshmen Geoffrey King, Corey Miller and Kurt Kinkead, sophomore Andrew Brown, juniors Ben Daniel and Angel Santiago and senior Paul Panning.

Daniel posted a mark of 6-6 and took third place in the high jump. He looks to perfect his technique as the team heads into the Indiana Invitational.

"It's just taking me awhile to get back into the rhythm of jumping and getting my form down," Daniel said. "I'm hoping this weekend will be a good one, especially since it was where I got a PR last year."

Santiago and sophomore Jeremy Gillingham both had season-best marks in the 200-meter dash and weight throw, respectively.

Panning had a disappointing performance in the pole vault at the Doug Raymond, but Jones is confident in a return to form for the NCAA qualifier.

"Paul didn't have a good meet last week, so he needs to come back," he said. "Those guys who have been consistent throughout the season need to come through for us this weekend."

The rest of the Ball State squad has not seen competition since the Notre Dame Triangular Jan. 23, giving them a two-week rest period.

One important aspect of the Indiana Invitational is the fact it is a two-day meet where, generally, preliminaries are held on Friday and finals on Saturday. The format requires a solid performance the first day to advance to the second day.

"This is definitely one of those meets to find out who's really ready and who's not, mentally," Jones said. "If you can't get a mark, then you're going home Friday night as opposed to coming back and being in the real meet on Saturday. The competition is going to be there."

The first events are scheduled to begin at noon Friday and will go through 10 p.m., starting back up at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.''2]+â+â-ƒb+â-ÿ+â-ûea+â-¬t`5+â-ó+â+â-ª+â-Öx?|+â-¦+â-ª+â-Ü+â-åp7v'+â-£-¦^++â-+S-óp"+â-Ä+âS+â-á^-¿/+â-Äi+â-Ç...u+++â-å...a+â-á?"-¦~+â-»T+â-¦eG-¦y+â-ì-»+â-«vm--s`+â-åt?tQrP+â-¦']?-- W=X-¬-+M+â-î'
