Dear Editor,
I have read two opinion articles now over the debate regarding a new student center. One suggests we take that money and invest it in revitalizing our library, the other suggests that to satisfy the modern standards of a university we must have a new student center. I would like to know if anyone has thought about asking the students what they want. Has there been any polling data that suggests that students actually want to put money into this? The latest article seems to give the impression that students want a new student center more than they would want a new parking garage.
Apparently the writer and the people they represent don't have
to park their cars on this campus. Worse is the idea to sacrifice an existing parking lot for the construction of a new student center. Unless there is overwhelming proof that students are willing to not only compound the existing parking problem, but allocate money from the building budget to a new student center which seems to be motivated by a need for nicer office spaces for the groups pushing this proposal, the SGA should focus on the needs of the students and not their own personal objectives. It is sad enough that the college age group is apathetic in the governments that write the laws and rules that govern our lives, but to be apathetic in our own government which we supposedly elect, if you want to call less than 20 percent of the university voting electing, is outrageous. The student body needs to work on letting the SGA know what we want. We should not let them guess or pursue their own goals. I challenge the SGA to work through the media outlets such as the DAILY NEWS and provide more information to the student body and allow feedback before getting behind a proposal such as they have.
