Open Letter to University Senate Chair:
Marilyn, I was dismayed after reading the communication from the Chairman of the Presidential Search Committee and the President of the Ball State University Board of Trusteees. As you know, the concession of adding one more faculty seat to the search committee fails to meet the objection voiced in Senate resolutions at meetings over which you presided.
I was especially astonished, however, that you would attempt to lend legitimacy to this process by selecting an additional faculty member to serve without consulting the governance system - especially in the face of overwhelming support for Senate resolutions criticizing the search process. It is my understanding that you did not consult with the Governance Committee which is empowered to slate members for ad hoc committee assignments nor did you consult with the Agenda Committee which acts in lieu of University Senate when it is not in session. Clearly an individual committed to shared governance would have used these available means especially in the appointment of members to a highly controversial special committee like this one. In light of your actions, the Senate deserves answers to several questions: What criteria did you utilize to make this selection? What constituencies did you consult? What type of balance does this member add to the search process?
These are serious questions that lend some to believe committee selections are merely a product of your own personal views. Your actions only served to further undermine the legitimacy of the search process.
