GYMNASTICS Cards come up short against Chippewas in weekend meet

Central Michigan continues MAC winning streak

In a come-from-behind fashion, Central Michigan defeated the Ball State gymnastics team 192.300 to 191.925 Sunday.

The Cardinals (3-2, 1-2 MAC) held a 145-143.075 lead heading into each team's final event. Ball State's final rotation was the beam, which was its weakest event last meet.-á

Again, the beam produced the lowest score (46.925), which was also the Cardinals' lowest total all season for an event.

Unfortunately for BSU, it came at the wrong time, as Central Michigan recorded a 49.225 on the floor, its final rotation, giving the Chippewas the victory.

Central Michigan (5-2, 1-0 MAC) has now won 13 straight over conference opponents, and 12 straight at home. The last team to defeat the Chippewas was Ball State in the 2002 MAC Championships.

Although coach Mary Roth thought Ball State had the victory seemingly in reach heading into the final rotation, she did acknowledge the Chippewas' win streak.

"They have a great program and are a really good team," Roth said.

The Cardinals were again led by Courtney Vojtasek, who posted a 38.850 on the all-around, good enough for second place overall.-áThe senior led the team on beam (9.650) and scored a career-high on the floor (9.850).

Junior Kelli Davis tied Vojtasek on the floor, matching a career-best 9.850. Davis posted an all-around score of 38.625, which was third overall.

Jessica Surridge posted a career-best 9.875 on bars. It was also the best score for BSU on the bars this season. Surridge also competed in the all-around for the first time this season, totaling 38.225.

The Cardinals were also helped out by solid contributions from a pair of freshmen. Kelly Watson led the team on vault, scoring a 9.675. Jenna Tarkington scored a career-high 9.775 on the floor and totaled a 37.875 in the all-around.
