Until the last ten minutes, no one was watching the Super Bowl, not even Rosco, the dog. The game was on at Lindsey Sherrier, Ashley Hulse and Eric Rosenthel's house, and they were having a Super Bowl party, but the game wasn't important.
"Right now, we don't really care who wins," Adam Dahms said during the third quarter. "I'm cheering for the score really."
Dahms had entered a 'squares' pool. In a squares pool, each participant draws two squares with numbers on it, one for each team. If the numbers match the last number in the score, for the correct team, then the person wins.
"I got two and nine," Dahms said. "Those are, like, the worst numbers."
With 2:58 to go in the fourth quarter, the Patriots scored a touchdown to take the lead 29-22, and Dahms started paying attention.
A short while later the Panthers scored again, and Dahms' chances were crushed. Still, he had a team to root for.
"I want to see the Patriots win, just so I can say the Colts are the second best," he said. "But you ask anyone right now and that's what they'll say."
Everyone else had a tougher time deciding who to root for. Sherrier had a tough time deciding but eventually settled on the Panthers.
"Tom Brady is hot," she said. "But the Panthers have better uniforms."
Except for the last few minutes, when people started getting interested, party-goers found other ways to keep entertained, like a nice game of President.
"When we were playing cards, I forgot we were watching the game," Hulse said. "If the Colts were playing, I'd care."
When the party-goers were taking a break from cards, the girls knew what they were looking for.
"Yay, half time's in a few seconds," Hulse said.
Still, even the half time was, as a general consensus, a disappointment.
"This is seriously the most random half time show," Sherrier said.
"OK, so half time sucked," Naomi Keeler added later.
Even when the game came down to the final seconds, not everyone was pleased.
"Can I just say, it sucks to win by a field goal," Andy Gurney said.
