Chicago Tribune editor to speak about errors in media

The customer service editor for the Chicago Tribune will speak about accuracy and credibility today.

Margaret Holt's presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Arts and Journalism Building Room 175.

She is originally from Missouri where she attended journalism school. She has worked in Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Chicago, where she currently resides.

"I definitely think Holt will have a positive affect on the students she speaks to if she gets them thinking about their responsibilities as journalists to be accurate in everything they do," journalism department Advisor Daniel Waechter said.

Holt is the third speaker of four Chicago Tribune Professional in Residence Speakers. She arrived Monday morning and will spend the week here participating in activities such as speaking to high school advisors, meeting with several college classes, discussing aspects of journalism one on one to students and attending various outreach programs.

"I am hoping to let the students know what some of the standards in journalism are. Ethics and values of journalism are very important," Holt said.

Holt said people have to be able to trust the media.

"Credibility is really important both in terms of work and for you as an individual," Holt said. "People have to know that what you do can be counted on. They have to be able to trust your work."
