GANG STARR "THE OWNERZ"

**** out of five

There are at least two rap stars in this country who are very unhappy with where hip-hop is going, and their names are Guru and DJ Premier. "All you DJs are lettin' the program directors handcuff you and sit there and tell you how to mix," Guru shouts in the intro of "Peace of Mind," one of the many advanced tracks found on their seventh and latest release. The duo from Brooklyn brushes off the debris from the catastrophe that's happened around them, jumps on stage and shows the "robots" how things are supposed to be done. Guru spits superior on each layer with a laid-back wisdom that's not too afraid to brag. Meanwhile, the album is heavy in sampling, but it's the way sampling is supposed to sound. Premier's choice of soundtrack takes the listener to a ground-breaking hip-hop world that doesn't only make your head bounce, but it's meant to revolutionize. The shame is that most people are too busy selling out to pay enough attention and learn the lesson. They've been doing this since '87, son; just shut up and listen to what they have to say.
