Ball State's Center for Media Design is researching college students' views about Internet video downloading for an online video rental service.
Rodger Smith, associate director of the Center for Media Design said Movielink came to Ball State because of the center's understanding of new media and the Internet.
"Oftentimes we in the Midwest think we don't have anything exceptional to offer," Smith said. "For Ball State to be selected, rather than UCLA or NYC, is significant. Our ability to work across colleges ... will serve as a research and development arm for Movielink."
Movielink is owned by five studios: MGM, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Universal and Paramount.
According to Movielink's Web site, Internet users can download a movie for thirty days. However, once users open the movie, they have 24 hours to view it before the movie is no longer available.
The center will help Movielink refine the technological aspects of offering movies via the Internet, Smith said.
"As long as the relationship is fruitful and growing," he said, "we'll continue to work together. We hope it does."
