$100k donation leads to new scholarship

Thanks to a retired Fort Wayne principal's gift, Ball State will offer elementary education majors the Ann D. Ballinger scholarship.

The scholarship sprang from a $100,000 donation from Norman Ballinger. His wife, Ann, died in November. She earned a degree in elementary education from Ball State. For 43 years she taught kindergarten and first grade in Fort Wayne.

Lawrence Smith, chairman of the elementary education department, said in a press release, the scholarship will help students remember an outstanding educator.

"Even in Ann's passing, she continues to make a contribution toward improving education in Indiana," Smith said.

The scholarship is available to undergraduate students.
