AT ISSUE: President Bush says constitutional process is last chance for preservation of marriage

President Bush's State of the Union Tuesday should have left a sour taste in the mouths of civil liberties activists. Bush denounced same-sex marriage and judges that ruled for the institution.

"Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton," Bush said. "That statute protects marriage under federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states."

Though this is the traditional view of marriage, the American family is changing.

In the 1950s, it was taboo to be divorced or for a woman to worked out of the home. As women began to enter the business community, it was taboo to put a woman as an executive or pay her more than her male counterparts.

America has changed. Single-income families have become a thing of the past. The definition of the average American family is continuing to change.

Sexual orientation, a subject that used to be avoided, is more out in the open in America than ever. Every large city has a district geared toward gay people. There are gay magazines, gay plays, gay bands and gay television . One of the most popular television shows in the nation is Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."

America has begun to fully embrace its gay population and some states have already taken the next step to honor same-sex unions as legal unions.

People in same-sex unions function just like married couples, but they have more trouble obtaining the benefits of married couples. Some have difficulty getting partners' names on their insurance. They also have difficulty adopting children.

With Tuesday's speech serving as Bush's last State of the Union of this term, he showed he is not willing to accept this change.

No attempt at a constitutional amendment will stop people from living the way they want to live in a country that claims to be free. A country that denies freedom from some of its citizens is not a free country.

If Bush is not ready to adapt to a changing America, he is not ready to serve another term as president.
