Virginia Ball suffers stroke, is resting in Miami hospital

Edmund Ball's widow was vacationing in Cayman Islands

Virginia B. Ball, philanthropist and the daughter-in-law of oneof the original Ball brothers, suffered a massive stroke Wednesdaywhile vacationing in the Cayman Islands.

John Fisher, Ball's brother-in-law, said she was flown to ahospital in Miami where she remains with her children. He said thefamily was not releasing many details, but he did say Ball, 84, hasbeen taken off life support.

Muncie residents found out about Ball's condition Sunday atFirst Presbyterian Church on Riverside Avenue, where Ball is amember of the congregation.

Ball married Edmund F. Ball, the son of Edmund B. Ball, in 1952.Edmund F. Ball died in 2000 at the age of 95 after suffering astroke.

Since her arrival in Muncie, Ball has made a number ofcontributions to the community. Recently, she became the sponsor of"Catalyst," a public sculpture to be placed in front of theMinnetrista Center in June 2004.

Ball said the sculpture is the most appropriate way she canthink of to honor her late husband.

"It will be what 'Beneficence' is and 'The Passing of theBuffalo' is to us," said Nancy Carlson, chairman of theTelecommunications Department. Carlson is the executive producer ofa documentary about Edmund F. Ball released in 2000.
