Ball State's swimming and diving teams had successful first-halfseasons, according to women's coach Laura Seibold-Caudill and men'scoach Bob Thomas.
Seibold-Caudill said she is pleasantly surprised by the progressher team has made halfway through the season.
"Everybody's doing really well," she said. "All of them are asurprise. At this point, we've got a lot of ladies doing personalbests. We got a lot of season bests (at the Zippy Invitational). It's a real good indication going into second semester that we'reright on track of our goals."
Some members of the men's team stopped training this past summerbecause they didn't know if the season would even happen with thebudget situation in the athletic department that cost Ball Statethe men's cross-country and track and field teams.
"The team was in jeopardy over the summer, and it was noticeableat the beginning (of the season)," Thomas said.
After the women's team easily defeated Illinois State to startits season, both teams finished second at the IndianaIntercollegiate, held in West Lafayette, behind Purdue.
But the women's team fell to two tough MAC rivals, Akron andBuffalo, on a road trip, and both teams fell the following week toMiami (Ohio).
"Our trip to Akron and Buffalo wasn't what I was looking for,"Seibold-Caudill said. "It was too early in the season."
The men's team is 4-2 in dual meets heading into break, whilethe women post a 5-4 record. The other meets have produced parallelresults for the teams so far. Both have defeated IUPUI, St. Louis,Butler and Xavier and lost to Michigan State.
Then there was the Zippy Invitational. Both coaches called itthe best part of the season.
"I think that's a good indicator of how our season is going,"Seibold-Caudill said.
Neither coach could pinpoint a single individual or even a fewswimmers whom they were most pleased with. Instead, they said theywere pleased with the all of their swimmers and the unity they'veshown.
"We've got a very close-knit group," Thomas said. "They all, from the beginning of the year, have had bright moments. They'veall played a major role in our team's success."
