LETTER: Daily News shouldn't use event to gain readership

Dear Editor:

As a journalism major, I have been taught, "If it bleeds itleads," an ugly aspect of journalism that remains true no matterthe circumstance.

The tragedy of this past Saturday cannot be understated. Theloss of a student, a friend and a human being is put under amicroscope when it happens in a community such as the one we havehere at BSU.

The "blame game" has begun. At the scramble light people talk ofit. In our classes, our professors discuss it. In dining areas, theemployees echo the same polarized views the rest of campus isbuzzing with.

And then the Daily News comes out with the Mondayedition. I commend the staff with a job well done. The paper didnot seem to have taken sides with either view. On Tuesday, however, the "Our View" editorial made me cringe.

The Daily News basically advertised for controversy. Theyasked for readers to write in and express themselves. I say that ifpeople have opinions they want heard, they will do so without theeditorial.

The headline in Wednesday's paper was a bit shocking and furthersensationalized this terrible event. The point size, along with thewords, has meaning. The Daily News is supposed to be alearning tool for those entering the journalism field, but they arealso on campus to serve as a medium that contains accurate messagesthat should not be exploited.

This news event is just that -- a news event, but there is moreto every picture than blaring headlines that are in boldface andtake up so much space.

Do not downplay this incident, but do not use yellow journalismas a means to get readership numbers to climb.
