LETTER: Campus must work together to overcome problem

Dear Editor:

Mistakes happen, but they should not cost a life. I don'tbelieve in playing the "blame game." The loudest voices now had notpaid a bit of attention before McKinney's passing. Steps should betaken, however, to ensure that this does not happen again. BallState has numerous, more-pointless rules concerning its students'safety, such as the policy requiring freshmen to live at home withtheir parents or the dorms.

I also accept, however, that I do not know everything. There aremany people at this campus who can think of wiser things to do, andwe need to listen to everyone's ideas to get the best possibleworking solution. Nothing will be solved by being hostile, andnothing will be solved unless we can work together. As PresidentBlaine Brownell said in his e-mail to the campus, Ball State is acommunity. Without an essential spirit of unity, the whole systemfalls apart. Take the time to listen to all sides of the story, andlet your voice be heard as well. This is the only way to takesomething from this utter tragedy.
