FIELD HOCKEY: BSU drops to fourth in MAC after weekend loss

Tough loss sets up rematch in Friday's tournament game

Despite outshooting Central Michigan, the field hockey team wasshutout and lost 3-0 in its final game of the season.

The loss dropped the Cardinals to fourth in the Mid-AmericanConference and set up a rematch with the Chippewas in thefirst-round of the MAC tournament Friday.

"It was a really tough loss," head coach Annette Payne."(Central Michigan) just came out harder and stronger than us. Theybeat us to the ball."

The Cardinals (8-11, 5-5 MAC) outshot the Chippewas 11-7. BallState also held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-3. It wasCentral Michigan's tough defense, Payne said, that kept theCardinals from scoring.

"Defensively, (the Chippewas) took away our opportunities,"Payne said.

Central Michigan scored its first goal 11 minutes into thecontest. The Chippewas added another goal eight minutes later totake a 2-0 lead at halftime. They scored their third goal with fourminutes left in the game to seal the victory.

"We're going to have to work through the loss," Payne said."We're going to have to win three games in a row to win the (MAC)tournament."

Kent State won both its games this weekend to win theconference. Louisville finished tied with Central Michigan forsecond. Because the Chippewas have a worse overall record, they getthe third seed in the tournament and will play Ball State, thefourth seed.

The Cardinals went 1-1 against Central Michigan this season. Itsvictory at home came after the Chippewas took a 3-0 lead in thefirst half. Ball State scored four straight goals to win inovertime.

Senior Afton Hess won the regular-season goal-scoring andoverall-scoring titles. She finished with 16 goals and 40points.
