Watermelon Bust boon for greeks

Nearly $10,000 raised for Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross

Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Tau Delta held the 31st annualWatermelon Bust Saturday.

The event attracted 650 people and raised close to $10,000,Alpha Chi Omega member Amy Ley said. Ley was one of the event'sorganizers.

An exact total raised from the event will not be announced untillater in the week, but last year Delta Tau Delta and Alpha ChiOmega raised more than $10,000.

"I'm pretty sure we came close to that this year," Ley said.

All proceeds were raised through ticket sales and sponsors. Themoney will be given to Habitat for Humanity and the American RedCross, Ley said.

Sixty-seven teams participated in this year's Watermelon Bustheld at LaFollette Field. Each team was made up of six people.

Fraternities, sororities, co-ed and independent teams battledfor first place in relay races moving watermelons across a sectionof LaFollette Field.

"We bought 400 watermelons, but only ended up using 100 ofthem," Ley said.

If a team broke their watermelon they were eliminated from thegames.

"This has become quite a tradition on campus," Betsy Fenn, AlphaChi Omega president, said.

For the third year in a row, Sigma Alpha Epsilon were thewinners of the men's division.

"Since I have been an SAE we have won Watermelon Bust everyyear," Brandon Wood, SAE member, said.

Epsilon Sigma Alpha won the women's division and Kappa Delta andSigma Nu won the co-ed division.

During the event the king and queen of Watermelon Bust werevoted on as students put money in a container representing theirfavorite candidate. A Kappa Delta was named queen and a Sigma Nu,who raised more than $90, won king.

A dunk tank, sumo wrestling, a bungee run and face painting wereoffered to anyone in attendance for $1.

The largest contributing sponsors of the event were Scotty'sBrewhouse, Marsh Supermarkets, TAWAS, Delta Faucet Company andRadio Now, who provided entertainment during the event.

Great Scott, a band from Indianapolis, performed after thegames.

"It went really well," Fenn said. "It gets better and betterevery year."
