Sororities open doors to 330 potential sisters

Skits and sisterhood highlight recruitment process for sororities

About 330 women began the sorority recruitment process Monday night.

All summer the Pan-Hellenic Council has been sending recruitment books and postcards to incoming freshmen about the 12 sororities on campus. However, Sigma Sigma Sigma has declined from participating leaving only 11 sororities going through the formal recruitment process said Laurel Peffer, vice president of public relations for Pan-Hellenic.

In the first weeks of school the Pan-Hellenic Council hosted events allowing students to learn more about the greek life on campus.

An activity fair was held on Aug. 23 where approximately 600 men and women filled the arena concourse to meet the different greek organizations on campus.

On Sept. 3, the Pan-Hellenic Council held an orientation to inform women on the recruitment process and alleviate any hesitations, Lindsay High, Pan-Hellenic vice president of recruitment said.

The potential new members have been divided into groups depending on where they live and are guided to each chapter by a Pi Chi.

Pi Chi's are women who have left their chapters for the recruitment period and help answer any general questions the girls may have, Lynda Malugen, director of student organizations and activities said.

"Our goal is that every woman interested in joining will join," Malugen said.

This year the Pan-Hellenic Council has added an extra day to the recruitment process so women and sororities could enjoy bid day longer, Peffer said.

They also extended the length of the rounds so girls could get to know the members better and the members could get to know them better.

The first round which began Monday evening and will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday nights as well, lasting from 9:20 p.m. to 11:10 p.m.

During first rounds, women visit each sorority's suite and learn about their chapters.

Thursday and Friday evenings will be second rounds when potential new members will visit a maximum of seven chapters, Peffer said.

During these rounds the women of the sorority will get to know the potential new members, as well as performing a skit for them that represents their chapter.

Saturday evening will be preference parties which will be held at the Student Center. This is a more formal event and the last event before bid day, Peffer said.

After preference parties, each sorority will be told how many women they can invite into their chapters depending on the amount of girls finishing the recruitment process, Peffer said.

Bid day will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lafollette Field.

Potential new members will receive their invitations in their small groups and then go to Lafollette Field to join their sorority.

"Bid day is a day for chapters to welcome their new members," Malugen said. "Each chapter then has their own individual celebrations which may be a cook out or a party in their suite."
