SGA cuts co-sponsorship funding

Student organizations can 'sublease' inches from weekly ad in Daily News

In an attempt to erase the $12,500 deficit, the UniversitySenate approved Wednesday the administration's request to cutco-sponsorship money to student organizations.

The administration, made up of SGA president Jayson Manship andhis executive board, decided to replace co-sponsorships with anadvertising campaign. Instead of funding, student organizations can"sublease" inches from a half-page ad that will run once a week inthe DAILY NEWS, Manship said.

SGA treasurer Eric Michel said that most of the money that wasdelegated to organizations in the past went toward advertising.

Though SGA funding is cut, the administration wants to make itclear that organizations can turn to other sources, like the CampusActivities Funding Board, for funding.

"It is not our business to help with funding," Manship saidWednesday. "There are other organizations on campus to help dothat."

Though SGA previously had budgeted money for co-sponsorship,some organizations say that they did not rely on it.

"SGA has been a very reliable supporter in the past," saidDaniel Stallings, director of leadership and service learning. "Itis disappointing but it is not anything that we rely heavilyon."

Stallings estimated that Student Voluntary Services receivedbetween $200 and $1,000 in funding from SGA last year.

Jeffrey Carter, Director of University Singers, said that theprocess of applying for funding through SGA was too rigorous tobother with.

After going through months of paperwork, University Singers wasgiven only a couple hundred dollars for their Mid-American ShowChoir Championship, Carter said. In addition, SGA required them torun a full-page advertisement in the event's program.

Carter said that University Singers has not received anyautomatic funds from SGA, University Programming Board, or anyother university organization.

Manship said this is a necessary cut.

Previously, SGA could be held accountable for problems thatoccurred at an activity it helps to fund, Manship said.

While addressing the new budget, Manship explained his planto abolish the $12,500 deficit while cutting nearly $20,000 inspending:

* Eliminate bus trips:

For several years in the past, SGA chartered bus tripsallowing students to pay a low fee to travel to their home towns.Because of low interest, SGA lost $3,024.20.

* Reduce Co-Sponsorship:

While $8,000 will be cut from co-sponsorship, only $2,000will be kept for actual 'Co-Sponsored' Events. Groups will nolonger be able to apply to SGA for Co-Sponsorship money.

* Reduce Senate Spending:

Committee and department budgets will be abolished and moneywill be distributed according to need.

* Reduce Advertising Costs:

By increasing the size of the DAILY NEWS advertisingcontract, the cost per ad is lowered. By reducing the B-Book adfrom whole to half page, costs were cut from $3,500 to$1,250.

* Hire work-study students as receptionists:

By hiring work-study students, the payroll expense will bereduced by almost $4,000.
