FEMA, Red Cross assessing local damage; set to finish late today

On Thursday, members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency worked alongside county, state and Red Cross emergency personnel to assess recent flood damage in Muncie.

Two teams picked their way through Delaware County, sizing up property damage and talking to residents.

Emergency teams are also assessing Marion and Hendricks counties.

Bill Gosnell, director of the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency, said the flood damage is the worst he has ever seen. The areas along Manville and Burlington roads were hit the hardest, he said.

The teams have seen a variety of damage, ranging from two inches of water in a basement to several feet swallowing up houses and vehicles, said Gene Romano, public affairs officer for FEMA.

He also said no one reported any injuries.

The emergency teams should be done with the three county assessments by the end of today.

Because of extensive damage, Gov. Frank O'Bannon requested federal aid for victims Thursday, asking the president to declare a 26-county area, including Delaware, a disaster area. Teams are now gathering data for the preliminary damage assessment.
