Favorite Classics

BSU students share their all-time favorite movies from childhood to present

For a film to reach the classics status they must become"standards of excellence and recognized value," according to theMerriam-Webster Dictionary.

Sophomore Ashley Vaughn described a classic movie as one thatshe watched as a kid.

"It's something every generation can enjoy, not like movies suchas 'American Pie," she said.

Ball State students have opinions of what they consider to beclassic films.

Web sites such as www.afi.com offer lists of the top classicmovies of all time. They are set up in separate categories andoverall selections.

The majority of the American Film Institute's movies are olderfilms, but several Ball State students named newer films, oftenreferred to as "modern classics," as their favorite selections.

Students have different tastes for classical movies. Some enjoymusical that were made into movies.

Sophomore Megan Bess said her favorite classic movie is"Grease."

"It's one of the best musicals that has ever been made into amovie," she said. "Musicals that are made into movies generallybecome classics."

Other students enjoy comedy films. by:

"'Animal House' is fitting for Ball State students because it'sthe classic college movie," senior Kristin Rennels said.

Holiday movies are usually a big hit among students. One that isreally popular is 'A Christmas Story."

"'A Christmas Story' is my favorite classic movie because it'sone of those movies that everyone relates to," senior LaurenKloepfer said.

Other students enjoy movies often referred to as chickflicks.

"'Dirty Dancing' is, without a doubt, my favorite classic moviebecause it was a big dance movie of its time," senior Casey Smithsaid. "Plus, it has Patrick Swayze in it, and he looked really hotshaking his butt in his black pants."

Some students recognized older films as classics, and those aremore typical of what the American Film Institute would recognize asthe top classic movies.

Janelle Swaidner, a sophomore, said "Peter Pan" is a classicmovie because it reminds her of peanut butter.

Junior Jenn Jackett identified "The Wizard of Oz" as herfavorite classic because it was the first of its kind.

"Everybody has seen it, and everybody will continue to see it."she said.

Classic movies can be viewed around the clock on the TurnerClassic Movies cable channel. The Web sitewww.turnerclassicmovies.com gives feedback about the selectionsthat are shown. Viewers can also suggest a movie if it hasn't beenscheduled to play.
