Coach: Team needs work on consistency for successful fall

If the Ball State men's golf team has its way, its most recentouting at the Mid-Pine Intercollegiate in North Carolina will notforeshadow what is to come in the fall season.

"We took such a young team down here, it was kind of hard to geta read on how the rest of the fall will go," head coach Mike Flecksaid."One thing is for sure: We have a lot of work to do. We haveto get a lot more consistency."

The Cardinals finished XX in a 14-team field that included fourteams that competed in last year's NCAA Championships.

"The competition was really good," Fleck said. "The scores onMonday were low. It was a very competitive event."

Ball State was led by sophomore Patrick Wilkes-Krier, who shot a143 (71-72) after two rounds and a 76 in the final round, givinghim a 3 over par for the tournament.

"The team never gave up," Fleck said. "We do not have a wholelot of experience, but I like the way we competed and kept ourfocus, even though we did not play the way we wanted to."

California captured its second consecutive title at theMid-Pines Intercollegiate, shooting a 273 in the final round for athree-round score of 832. The team's final score broke thetournament record of 844 set by Texas Tech in 2001.
