Student works in politics as Senate intern

Junior history major works for Evan Bayh; rubs shoulders with other senators and politicians

While most students went back to their hometowns, one student spent her summer in Washington, D.C. as an intern for Sen. Evan Bayh.

Lauren Spath gained the opportunity after engaging herself in the Fund for American Studies program, which was introduced to her through the honors program.

Though the program works to connect students with internships, Spath took the initiative and found this one for herself.

She started by applying for an internship with Sen. Richard Lugar, Indiana's other senator. Then the one with Bayh opened up.

Before beginning her internship, Spath spent two months in Washington and took two classes at Georgetown University.

Spath, in her third year, is a pre-law student majoring in history. She is a native of Fort Wayne and graduated from South Side High School.

"The office part wasn't that great: conducting tours, talking with correspondents and all the paperwork," Spath said. "But I experienced many good things like special programs and speakers."

Spath said she did not have much interaction with Bayh.

"He was always really busy and running around doing different things," she said. "The most interaction I had was handing him papers."

Spath, along with the rest of the interns, did enjoy a luncheon with Bayh, though.

"D.C. was great," Spath said. "It was fun to live in the city and see all the sites."

Spath said she saw Hillary Clinton almost everyday because her office was across the hall from where she worked.

Spath met many other senators and other politicians, like Al Sharpton.

Spath said she may someday consider running for a political office.

"This gave me an opportunity to see how things run in Washington, D.C.," Spath said. "It was really neat."

Spath is the president of Kappa Delta Sorority and the Multicultural Club. She is also a teaching intern for the history department.
