Derrick Borror, 21, was killed yesterday afternoon when two vans were totaled after they collided on the passenger sides while traveling on U.S. Highway 35 and County Road 350 South.
"Both passenger sides were crushed completely in," Sergeant David Spence with Muncie Police said.
Toni McFadden, 23, was the driver of the van while Borror was the front passenger.
William W. Hayes, 62, was the driver of the other van involved in the crash. Hayes was riding alone and was driving a Lifestream Services van.
"Hayes had just finished a delivery," Sheriff George Sheridan said.
Spence said Hayes' vehicle was heading northbound on U.S. Highway 35 while McFadden was heading southbound.
"It appears McFadden went left to center," Sheridan said.
There is still speculation on what happened.
"She (McFadden) doesn't remember much," Spence said. "She said she remembered traveling down the road and then remembered helping him (Borror) after the collision."
Spence said Hayes remembered seeing McFadden lean toward Borror while the car was in motion.
"He (Hayes) said her focus was on the passenger and not on the roadway," Spence said.
Although there were not any items on the scene that would give suspicion to substance abuse, Spence said blood samples were taken. Spence said the results would be known in a few weeks.
Hayes' vehicle had skid marks behind it, Spence said. Spence said Hayes was wearing his seat belt but was uncertain about Borror and McFadden.
No one was thrown from the vehicle.
Spence said both drivers and the passenger were taken to Ball Memorial Hospital. The time and location of Borror's death was not available at press time, but he died shortly after the accident. As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, McFadden was in the emergency room and Hayes in intensive care.
All three involved are Muncie residents. Borror and McFadden both reside at 5100 E. County Road 700 South and Hayes at 1518 W. 14th.
