Letter to the editor: Republicans skew public opinion polls

Dear Editor,

When Russell Greim wrote March 17 that "I believe in the founders and their ideals ... ." he really meant, based upon past columns, that he believes in what he wants the words of the founders, such as James Madison, to mean.

That is, it's OK to exaggerate intentions.

He is so impressed by polls that show a "majority of Americans support war against Iraq," but what about the polls that show 81 percent of Americans want strong environmental laws? GOPers still refuse to make protecting our air, water, land and other precious natural resources a top priority.

What does public opinion mean?

But we have a president who owes his presidency more to the Supreme Court than to the ballot box. Chief Justice William Rehnquist and four other Republican justices named Mr. Bush president.

I suppose one could stretch the Lockean truth in the Constitution and conclude that the Supreme Court are first among equals, but many of us have spent time in the barnyard and know that not all animals are equal.

Nevertheless, let's not trample the Constitution and Bill of Rights in our march for war. Some Americans want patriotism lite; they chose to give Steve Earle a free pass when he wrote "John Walker's Blues" for his Jerusalem album, but they jumped down Natalie Maines' throat of saying she's ashamed for President Bush.

We all have the right to wear T-shirts. That's "under the Constitution," too!
