Despite competition from other singing and dancing sorority women and fraternity men, the Ice Cold Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. stole the hearts of the crowd and judges Thursday night at the Greek Week Variety Show.
The men from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. stepped off the stage to a standing ovation of more than 400 audience members. Fraternity members Otis Garmond, Marvin Eans and Kenny Daniels performed without the fourth member of their group, Jason Crowe. But 11-year-old Jerren Young made a guest appearance.
"I told Mr. Otis that I could step too, so they asked me to show them some steps," Young said. "I told them it was all coming from my head, but I did it."
Garmond chose Young from the South Madison Community Center as a "good young man" to perform in their group. Alpha Phi Alpha presented Young with a Certificate of Appreciation for his crowd-pleasing performance.
The variety show was not the Alpha Phi Alpha men's first competition. They won the Homecoming Scholarship Talent Show and last weekend performed at Xavier University.
The group will soon travel to Miami University for another performance. A regional step competition will be held in Chicago, Ill. If the group succeeds in Chicago, it will move on to Detroit, Mich., for the national competition.
The variety show, sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings Bar and Grill, featured 13 acts including vocal solos and duets, bands, guitar performances, piano performances and dance solos and duets.
Emcees Irving Washington and Jason Lebar warmed up the crowd and kept the audience interested between acts.
Amy Sharp headed the Greek Week Variety Show with help from Nick Zuniga and the Greek Week Steering Committee. They held two sets of auditions for the 13 available performance slots.
Other highlights of the night included the Best Male Solo, "Like I Love you," by Ricky Mesina; Best Female Solo, "This Time Around," by Laura Riggs of Pi Beta Phi and the Best Group performance, a step routine by the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. that drew the crowd to a strong standing ovation.
