Men's track heads to IU for 'low-key' meet

Hoosier Hills Invite to prepare Cards for MAC Championship.

The men's track and field team will participate this Saturday in their final indoor meet before the Mid-American Conference Championships on Feb. 28.

Ball State will travel to Bloomington to take part in the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University.

The Cardinals are coming off a successful effort last week in the two-day Cannon IV Classic where they took first in three events -- the pole vault, high jump and distance medley.

Pole vaulter Paul Panning had a winning jump of 16-6 3/4 and Ben Daniel took the high jump when he posted a 6-8 jump. The distance medley relay included Brian Runyon, Scott Allen, Steve Schilling and Jesse Davis.

Ball State head coach Jim Sprecher views the Hoosier Hills Invitational as a low-key meet because of the MAC Championships being the next week.

The Cards will concentrate on resting up its players and sharpening them for the championships the weekend after.

"This is probably one of the more low-key meets of the season from the standpoint that we have conference championships the week after," Coach Sprecher said.

Sprecher said that the field events athletes will be participating in their normal events, because it takes them a relatively short amount of time to recover from a meet.

The coach added that the sprinters and hurdler will be limited to one event and the distance runners will be running a shorter event.
