Men's tennis hosts IPFW, IUPUI

Cards play their first Mid-American Conference contest.

The men's tennis team will host its second doubleheader on Saturday. After a 4-3 loss at Michigan last weekend, Ball State (2-2) will entertain IPFW and IUPUI. Those two matches begin a stretch of nine straight at home.

Against the Wolverines, Kevin Burnett and Patrick Thompson recorded singles wins, while Thompson/Chris Varga and Burnett/Matt Baccarani teamed for doubles wins.

Although the Mastadons and Jaguars are not the caliber of competition as the Big Ten, 31-year head coach Bill Richards said his team cannot relax. Also, the IPFW match marks the first Mid-American Conference contest.

"Obviously it's different level teams," Richards said. From my standpoint, I'm looking for the guys to go in with good attitudes, with good motivation, and just play good tennis.

"You just have to play your best, no matter who you're playing. When you think it'll be easy, that's when it becomes hard."

Richards said that while he hasn't made the lineups for Saturday yet, he wants to give everyone on the team a chance to play.

"Just like the first doubleheader, I want to play everyone," he said. "I don't want to cut our team too thin and take any chances, but I think we have tremendous depth. I have confidence in them all the way down.

"I want to get playing time for some guys who don't play as much. I've got a lot of guys I think are capable of playing, and I'm open-minded as to who will play as time goes by."
