Letter to the editor: Students should involve themselves in city issues

Dear Editor,

For all of you students who think Student Govern-ment Association is not important and the city of Muncie has no offerings or appeal to students, my name is Phil Beaudoin and I am the director of the public policy for SGA. Please take the time to understand a little of what I do.

I am the head of the Ball State side of Muncie-Ball State Coalition. This team is responsible for bringing to light the issues that are of utmost importance to students at the university and officials of Muncie and is comprised of four Ball State students and seven Muncie officials, including Mayor Canan. Muncie has a very keen interest in helping students learn about their city and a wish to help solve some issues students have with the city, some of which include the condition of the roads, the McKinley Project, the MITS project, on- and off-campus recycling, Muncie events and programming, as well as several other issues that are beyond the scope of this small letter.

This coalition will also be responsible for an off-campus housing guide (to include information on landlords and complaints against them) as well as the possibility for a student's guide to Muncie. Look for these publications next year.

I would like to challenge everyone to get involved with the city. Please take the time to inform yourself of the issues before you complain, yet offer no tangible solutions to the problem. Most of the issues students talk about have a very good chance of already being addressed in SGA or the coalition. If anyone would like information regarding any of the issues or would be interested in becoming a member of my team to address these issues head-on, e-mail me at pabeaudoin@bsu.edu, but please do not criticize Muncie or Ball State without knowing the facts.

Phil Beaudoin
SGA Director of Public Policy
