Ball State's record .500 following loss

The men's tennis team fell to 2-2 with Saturday's loss, but not after putting up a fight against 48th-ranked Michigan. The Wolverines downed Ball State 4-3.

"It certainly would've been an upset," 31-year head coach Bill Richards said.

"But we went in with the mindset to win, and we thought we could. We weren't going to be satisfied with anything less, so it's disappointing we came up short.

With a narrow 9-8 win by Matt Baccarani/Kevin Burnett and an 8-2 victory by Chris Varga/Patrick Thompson, the Cardinals won the doubles point. Burnett won at No. 3 singles 6-4, 7-6 (6) and Thompson at No. 6 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3 to knot the match at 3-3. In the deciding match-up, at second singles, Varga fell 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

"It was a great, hard-fought college tennis match," Richards said. "It all came down the last match, and Chris fought his heart out. He just couldn't win a couple key points when he had to.

"That's the most gut-wrenching way to lose. Hopefully we'll get some of those tight wins in the future."
