Men's track team to travel to South Bend

Today's meet will be team's first scored meet of the season

The men's track team will participate in its first scored meet of the season when it travels to South Bend for the Notre Dame Triangular today.

Ball State is coming off of two successful meets to open the season: the Ball State Open and Purdue Invitational. The Cardinals have won 10 events in the two meets.

Ball State will continue to rely on leaders such as pole vaulter Paul Panning, who has finished first in both meets for the Cardinals, breaking his school indoor record both times. His record is 17 feet 3/4 inch.

Because this is one of the few scored meets of the year, head coach Jim Sprecher may approach the competition differently in the way he places runners.

"In a duel meet you want to make sure you score two people per event," Sprecher said. "When you are putting your athletes in events, you want to be sure you put them in an event that is unprotected."

Ball State defeated Notre Dame last year with a much more experienced team, but the Cardinals have since lost several members to graduation and are now composed of nearly 70 percent underclassmen.

"The first expectation (heading into this meet) is to beat Notre Dame," Sprecher said. "We need to do the things necessary to put ourselves in that position, and that's just to beat them head-to-head."
