Forums begin for associate provost position

Deborah Balogh named her Ball State experience as her biggest qualification for the job in the first of two open forums of candidates for the vacant associate provost position.

When Beverley Pitts was hired this summer as provost, the associate position that Pitts had previously filled was left open. Since then, Balogh and University College Dean Tom Lowe have shared the associate provost's duties while a national search was conducted.

Balogh has been with Ball State since 1981, when she was hired as a professor of psychology.

She moved from faculty member to administrator and currently serves as Dean of the Graduate School and also acts as assistant provost while the associate position is vacant.

Balogh said that the graduate school works with almost every department on campus and has no faculty of its own. She said this experience would benefit her if she were to be hired for the position.

"The joke is graduate deans are deans without their faculties," Balogh said. "But awareness of all departments is very important for the associate provost."

According to the job posting on Ball State's Web site, the associate provost is responsible for providing leadership for areas of academic affairs and faculty development and also supporting the provost in general administration of academic affairs.

Balogh also identified two other Ball State experiences that she said would help her if she were hired. Balogh is a member of the strategic planning task force and also is involved with Ball State's 10-year reaccredidation self-study.

"The provost agenda is intimately related to the strategic plan," Balogh said.

The associate provost is in charge of four administrative units: school of extended education, graduate school, academic research and academic assessment. Balogh also called the associate provost the environmental scanner for the provost, watching for things such as new initiatives and pockets of energy.

Rod Davis, associate dean of the college of business and chair of the search committee said there were 25-30 applicants for the position. The other finalist, Jonathan Glenn of the University of Central Arkansas will be questioned at an open forum Thursday.
