Cardinals break from halftime tie

Bobcats run into foul trouble, giving up 29 free throws.

An offensive barrage carried the women's basketball team past Ohio University in Saturday's shoot-out at Worthen Arena as the Cardinals won 83-71. Behind the shooting of junior Johna Goff -- who hit five 3-pointers -- Ball State held off the Bobcats for its fourth win in a row.

After the two schools traded baskets for a 45-45 tie at halftime, the Cardinals used a series of runs to open a 15-point lead with more than 12 minutes left to play. But a couple well-timed Ohio timeouts energized the Bobcats (4-11, 0-4 Mid-American Conference) as they cut the lead down to seven after Candace Bates hit her fourth 3-pointer for Ohio.

"We knew Ohio had some three-point shooters," head coach Tracy Roller said, "but we went to the zone for a while to help our rebounding, because we knew they could be physical in the paint. I think we were much more aggressive during the second half and that helped us to the victory."

In the end, foul trouble did the Bobcats in as the team committed 28 fouls, allowing Ball State to take 29 free throws. Ohio had six players with more than three fouls, with two fouling out.

Freshman Dana Collins led the charge down the stretch for the Cardinals, scoring eight of her 16 points in the final seven minutes of play.

Ball State had five players score in double figures as Goff led the game with 22 points.

"I really love talking about this basketball team," Roller said. "We received so many great efforts from so many different players today.-á Jessica (Reiter) gets 13 rebounds for us. Dana (Collins) does a great job of running this team from the point guard position, and Tamara (Bowie) gets assists as a result of constantly being double teamed. Tamara is the most unselfish MAC Player of the Year candidate I've ever been around and that is definitely helping our team right now."
