Hoosier coach to miss New Year's Eve game

Davis suspended for outburst during loss to Kentucky

BLOOMINGTON (AP) -- Ball State will face Indiana University for a night of college hoops New Year's Eve, but they will not face Indiana's coach, Mike Davis.

Davis was suspended for one game Monday for his on-court outburst at a referee during a loss to Kentucky this month.

The Big Ten Conference said it accepted Indiana's recommendation for the punishment. The conference also publicly reprimanded Davis and told him to write an apology to the officials who worked the Dec. 21 game.

Davis had faced up to a six-game suspension under Big Ten rules. He again apologized Monday for charging onto the court to protest the lack of a foul call in the game's final seconds.

''There is no reason for me to act the way I acted,'' Davis said. ''I am really embarrassed by it, but that is part of life and part of competition and that happens in sports.''

Terry Clapacs, Indiana's interim athletic director, said the school would not appeal the punishment, and he is happy the Big Ten did not impose a greater penalty.

''In my view, this was never a six-game suspension problem,'' he said.

Davis' outburst occurred with Indiana trailing Kentucky 65-64 with 2.6 seconds left. Hoosiers guard Bracy Wright drove for a layup that bounced off the side of the backboard.

Davis, thinking a foul should have been called, ran onto the court, yelling and waving his arms at referee Bert Smith.

Smith repeatedly told Davis to ''walk away,'' but Davis persisted, following him to midcourt and continuing to yell. Smith ejected Davis, and Indiana lost 70-64.

During his postgame news conference, Davis was apologetic, saying his actions cost his team the game. He also apologized to his players and the fans.

Davis led Indiana to the NCAA championship game last season, his second as head coach. He became coach after Bob Knight was fired.
