Hoke tabbed as new coach

Ball State has named Brady Hoke as its new head football coach, athletics director Bubba Cunningham announced on Tuesday. Hoke, a former letterwinner for the Cardinals from 1977-80, returns to Muncie after serving the last eight seasons as a defensive assistant at Michigan, including the last six as defensive line coach.

Hoke replaces Bill Lynch, who was fired on December 1 after eight seasons. Lynch, who had one year remaining on his contract, was to be reassigned within the university.

In the eight years Hoke has been at Michigan under head coach Lloyd Carr, the Wolverines have compiled a 75-23 record, including a national championship in 1997. Before Michigan, he coached at nearby Yorktown High School (1982), Grand Valley State (1983), Western Michigan (1984-86), Toledo (1987-88) and Oregon State (1989-94).

While at Michigan Hoke tutored, among others, current National Football League players James Hall (Detroit Lions), Glen Steele (Cincinnati Bengals) and Josh Williams (Indianapolis Colts). He was also known in the Wolverine circles as an excellent recruiter.

A 1982 graduate of Ball State, Hoke was a captain on the 1980 team, recording 150 tackles and garnering second-team all-conference honors. He had 99 tackles as a sophomore "helping the Cardinals to a Mid-American Conference title" and 95 stops as a junior. His older brother Jon is a 1980 graduate of Ball State as is defensive backs coach of the NFL's Houston Texans.
