Ball State names new head football coach

Former Ball State letterman returns from stint in Michigan to lead the Cardinals.

Ball State officials announced their pick for the head football coaching slot Thursday, ending a three-week vacancy in the position.

Brady Hoke, a four-year football letterman for the Cardinals from 1977-80, will end his eight-year career as an assistant coach at Michigan University and accept the role of head football coach at Ball State.

Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham and Ball State President Blaine Brownell described countless hours on the phone with various sources in the search for Hoke, making sure their new coach would be someone who would fit in well at Ball State.

"(Hoke has) all of the qualities that we were looking for in a head coach," Cunningham said.

Hoke said he wants to educate the student body, letting them know that it takes the support of the entire university to build a successful football program.

"It's vital that you have a student body that believes in what we're doing," Hoke said.

That education may include trips for the new football coach to the dorms or joining the students in the tailgating area after the game, Hoke said.

The search for a new coaching staff will now begin. Hoke said he hopes to have something solid nailed down within the next three weeks.
