Tennis teams wrap up seasons

Burnett, Newman team up to win Flight B doubles.

The men's tennis team traveled to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend and competed in the last meet of its fall schedule. The events included two singles flights composed of 32 players, as well as doubles tournament of an equal size.

Senior Chris Varga advanced to the second round in Flight A, before losing to Baylor standout Ivor Lovrak. Fellow senior Kevin Burnett also lost in the second round of Flight A to an opponent from Virginia Tech.-á

According to head coach Bill Richards, the Cardinals dominated Flight B as the team advanced three players into the semifinals of the bracket and took home the winner and runner-up trophy.

Sophomore Clint Knable defeated teammate Paul Newman in the semis of that tournament. Patrick Thompson defeated a player from Virginia Tech in his semi-final match-up.-á

Sophomore Michael Heule was defeated in round one of the B Flight. However, he was able to bounce back and win four straight matches to win the consolation tournament.

"It was great for Mike because he has been sick and hurt," Richards said. "He didn't even get to play in some of our challenge tournaments. It's good to see him get some wins."

In addition, the team of Kevin Burnett and Paul Newman won the B Flight doubles tournament outright. The duo beat Bell and Pihl (8-3) from Liberty in the finals.

Coach Richards said his players would use the off-season to identify one or two things they are struggling with so they can improve in the areas where they are lacking. The Cards will now be idle until January 18, when they open-up the spring season by hosting Bradley University.
