Radar | Accessorizing Denim

From pants and purses to watches and shoes, denim is not just for jeans anymore. Denim has had a longtime stronghold in the clothing industry, but now denim is more of a fashion statement than just a durable fabric.

Levi Strauss & Co., one of the leading denim companies, offers a range of products for both men and women. Denim messenger bags can be found for men as well as jackets and a large variety of pants. Levi also makes a wide range of purses, skirts, jackets, as well as pants for women.

Denim apparel not enough? Designers such as Tommy Hilfiger also offer a wide variety of home decor in denim. Denim bed comforters, pillows, and shower curtains are available so consumers can decorate with this fashion trend.

According to Bridget Russo, Director of Public Relations for Diesel U.S., denim is popular because it is "so versatile and easy to wear."

"People feel good in it," Russo said. "It's a fabric for everyone."

Russo described denim as being "primarily a utility fabric" since it was originally designed for miners.

Denim has expanded over the years due to the different washes and cuts making denim more mainstream. More recently, denim has become more "haute couture," the creation of exclusive fashions, and can be worn to dress up or lounge around.

Russo said that Diesel has seen an increase in sales due to the fact that "everybody is doing it and everybody wants it." Considering that so many designers are using denim right now, Russo questions how long the other designers will stick with the denim fashions.

Diesel offers 22 different washes for denim. Each pair of Diesel jeans takes seven hours to make and is handmade in Italy. Currently Diesel's most popular style for women is their "Hush" jeans which are low slung with front patch pockets. For men, the "Rabox" jeans are made for comfort with a low waist and a loose, straight cut.

Russo said that black denim and super vintage style jeans are a "key look for fall." Women's low rise jeans will continue to dominate, but consumers should expect a "return to higher waist bands." A straighter leg cut will also make a return in jeans.

When Whitney Spencer, Ball State junior, noticed the new denim accessories available at American Eagle over the summer, she was both surprised and happy. Spencer had been carrying a denim purse that she bought at a garage sale when she was five.

"I was excited that a bag from my childhood became a trend," Spencer said.

The new denim products can be found just about anywhere. Along with the variety of stores comes a variety of price ranges. For this season's style and a larger investment, designers such as Diesel and Kenneth Cole offer denim for both men and women. Similar denim products can also be found in stores such as Target and L.S. Ayres for a more reasonable price.
