Our View: The Marred Yard

AT ISSUE: Ball State fails to recognize Marcus Merriweather's record-setting day

Marcus Merriweather set the school career rushing record Saturday. Too bad nobody knew about it.

On a 21-yard carry in the third quarter, the senior surpassed Bernie Parmalee's 13-year-old record, but the achievement wasn't even announced over the P.A. system. After the game, Merriweather said he didn't even know on which carry he surpassed the record.

"It's sad that they didn't stop the game or at least announce it. I had no idea," Merriweather said. "I figured we had some good yards going but we were clueless."

Sports Information Director Joe Hernandez said it was nobody's decision, but it is common courtesy to keep the game going.

"You don't stop the game as a courtesy to the other team, and to keep the flow of the game going," Hernandez said.

Emmitt Smith set the NFL rushing record last weekend, and the game wasn't stopped then either, Hernandez said.

That is true, but they at least announced the feat.

When Bonzi Wells broke the school scoring record in basketball, the team took a timeout to recognize the mark.

Merriweather probably won't be recognized until the postseason banquet. The banquet is invitation only, and don't expect one in the mail.

When the feat was finally announced at the end of the game, only a fraction of the just over 12,000 fans who attended Saturday's game remained to hear it.

After four years of fighting for every inch, one would think that a star tailback would be given his moment.
