Our View: SGA continues mission

AT ISSUE: Senators debate over shuttle bus stop safety

Student Government Association senators took a step in the right direction at Wednesday's meeting, but they should not stop moving forward.

SGA approved legislation suggesting the installation of a yellow flashing light on Tillotson Avenue between the stadium parking lot and the overflow lot.

Some senators opposed the plan with the argument that SGA could do more by suggesting a new shuttle bus stop at the overflow lot.

"I don't feel we should compromise," Sen. Eric Lutton said. "I think sometimes we need to step forward."

SGA should continue its mission. When the university officials expanded parking to the overflow lot, they should have also provided a safe way to get back on campus.

"This is a baby step," said Parliamentarian Ben Tietz. "This does not mean we need to stop working."

Tietz is right. Something needs to be done soon to protect every student who must cross Tillotson Avenue to reach the closest shuttle bus stop at the stadium lot, but SGA knows more can be done with the issue.

Luckily, the students have their senate looking out for them. Of the 44 students who participated in the vote, 18 disagreed and wanted to push further.

Senators opposed to the light said they believed their objective to expand shuttle bus service to the overflow lot would be forgotten by the university.

In order for senators to suggest an additional shuttle bus stop, a new piece of legislation will be necessary. Senators should pursue this issue. If the university is not looking out for the safety of its own students, SGA should.

Passing this legislation was a good-faith effort on behalf of SGA. The vote told the student body that SGA is doing all that it can to protect the lives of Ball State students.
