The Women's soccer team's season ended on Friday when it lost to the Ohio Bobcats 1-0 in the conference tournament semifinals. The loss dropped the team's record to 14-6-1, the best in the history of the program.
"Despite the loss, I thought we played great today," head coach Ron Rainey said. "I hope this is just a taste of what the future for women's soccer will be here at Ball State."
The Bobcats out-shot the Cardinals 17-7 on Friday. Ohio's lone goal came in the 55th minute off a header by sophomore Kendra Hornschemeier, her first score of the year.
"The result ended our season, but it was a great season," Rainey said. "There should be no regrets for the kind of year we had. It was a game between two teams with contrasting styles, and Ohio won the game today."
After Ohio defeated Ball State, they advanced to the tournament final and were soundly beaten by Miami, 5-1. The Bobcats finished their year at 15-5-2. Miami, by way of winning the conference tournament, will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Its record currently stands at 18-2-2.
It was the final game for seven BSU seniors, the first four-year graduating class in the team's history. Of these, Chelsea Cole, Emily Feeney, Eileen Weinheimer, Ehren Reagor, and Alexia Karamanis have all started nearly every game in school history.
The squad will return a number of starters, including sophomores Dee Nocero, Brittany Walden and Kate Nadalin, along with three juniors, Megan Swafford, Alicia Kalafut and Michelle Dineen.
Rainey also said that he was proud of his team for never giving up at anytime during the season, and was most happy with the improvement over the last four years. "We have a group of seniors who have worked extremely hard to get this program where it is today," he said. "I am very proud of all of them."
