Task-force will address space issues

A Parking Services task force that will address long and short-term parking issues will be created soon, Dean of Students Randy Hyman said Tuesday at a Parking Services forum.

Hyman told an audience of about 10 people the task force will include university staff and community members.

"I think our current program serves (BSU) very well, but it deserves some examination," Hyman said.

Hyman, along with Kevin Kenyon, associate director of facilities planning and management, and Gene Burton, acting director of public safety, entertained questions from students and community members at the forum.

Student Government Association sponsored the forum, which Vice President Megan Pickens said was used to help answer questions and concerns about parking services.

Questions centered on parking spot availability, the process of obtaining a parking tag, and discrepancies some of the lot signs may have caused.

"I think there is sufficient parking," Kenyon said. "It's just not where students want it to be."

Hyman and Kenyon spoke about new parking options that have yet to be finalized.

One is for a parking garage near the site of the new Music Building. Currently, Kenyon said the university has yet to obtain two properties on the desired site for the garage. The proposed plan will house an estimated 600 spaces, Kenyon said.

Hyman also introduced the option of turning land west of Tillotson Avenue into 260 spaces, but no plans have been specified for this possibility.
