Sorority to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital with three-mile walk

The 2nd-annual Melissa's Walk honors sorority member who died last year

This Sunday, sorority Delta Zeta will host the 2nd-annual Melissa's Walk in honor of Melissa Steckler, a member of the sorority who died July 31, 2001, by walking three miles around campus to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital.

Steckler, who would have a been a junior in elementary education, died due to extensive fire burns from a grilling accident in the burn unit of Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.

Jamie Dustman, chairwoman of Delta Zeta, said the sorority is hoping to raise $12,000 this year, compared to last year's $10,000. The money raised will go to the burn unit of Riley Children's Hospital.

Dustman said it is expensive to spend just one day in the burn unit.

"Last year was very emotional for us," Dustman said. "We're getting over the tears and hoping to be more on the lighter side. This is a time of celebration for her."

Dustman said Steckler touched the lives of many people during her time in Delta Zeta and as a student. The Delta Tau Delta fraternity chapter planted a tree in memory of Steckler in front of their house last year.

"She was very into Delta Zeta. She had a lot to give and was a very positive influence," Dustman said. "She was into making new members feel important."

Steckler's death came as a shock to members of the sorority, as well as her family and doctors, Dustman said. The doctors were very optimistic regardless of the burns that covered her body. She died due to internal damage from the flames.

Delta Zeta has also started a scholarship in Steckler's honor. "Melissa Steckler Sparkling Flame" is awarded to a Delta Zeta member who exemplifies an outgoing and motivational attitude.

"We miss her, but it's not all tears," Dustman said. "At times she motivates us, we think of her, or someone would do something that reminds us of her.

"She helps us get through the hard times, because we know she would have been right there with us.",,2(+â-Çw*Fmelissa's walkDNEditorial,,2SORT^+â-ä2AUDT
