Music an important staple in party planning

Internet sites can offer help to students when deciding on music.

What kind of music should a host play if when holding a party? What kind of music do students want to hear at parties?

Most likely, it depends on if the party is just a regular house party or if the party has a specific theme such as rap, club, alternative, etc. But, if Friday night rolls around and the choice between Nelly or Dixie Chicks becomes too difficult, the World Wide Web offers several Web sites for such a dilemma.

The Web site www.hearsay-online.com for example is described as , "Hear/Say, America's College Music Magazine, free monthly newspaper featuring stories, band interviews, CD reviews, featuring bands and music appealing to modern students, etc.

The Web site pricegrabber.com allows students to compare prices of party music CDs. There's even a site called World Party Music at wpmusic.com that has import and used CDs, audio samples and music information from Europe, Japan and the U.S.

At the same time, music.student.com, is listed as a site for college students to discuss music with each other. The site has info on music artists, music trivia games such as Name That Tune and music forums. The site even offers a handy party planner, which, "allows you to host a party or event and invite guests. Your guests can then automatically say if they're coming or not and you, the host, will be able to keep track. Also, guests can read and leave comments, invite or bring others, and answer your custom surveys.

While there may be a variety of Web sites to assist students in their music selections, opinions among Ball State students remain varied.

Marshall Aspy, a senior creative writing major, said the perfect party music is Cat Stevens.

Carrie Thornburg, a sophomore social work major said, "I like everything but I would say R&B or old school rap and I would play oldies too."

Katie Rubck, a sophomore telecommunications major likes to hear anything that she can dance, too. Junior Melinda Kammerer however, a social work major said, "I don't go to parties but if I did I'd play fun sporadic stuff that was clean."

One idea that did remain consistent among students was that of mixed CD's. Whether self made or store bought a mix can bring the perfect atmosphere to a dull party.

Melissa Crooks, a senior exercise science major and Annie Marcucci a sophomore family and consumer sciences major were in agreement that they hear a lot of mixed CD's being played along with rap and hip hop.
