University accepting freshman on first come first serve basis

Ball State is currently accepting freshmen on a space available basis only and by the end of the week, university officials could decide to end freshmen enrollment for fall 2002.

Incoming students risk losing their spots if their $50 deposits are not sent in and postmarked by May 17.

More than 4,000 students already turned in their $50 enrollment deposits required to ensure their spot in the 2002-03 freshman class. Vice President of Student Sffairs Doug McConkey said he is predicting 3,900 incoming freshman students in the fall.

"We are very pleased with the response from freshmen this year," McConkey said. "We just need to be sure that we can accommodate everyone."

More than 4,000 students have already paid the deposits and the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management sent out an additional 4,000 postcards to high school seniors who have been admitted to remind them of the fee.

The postcards remind students that the University is only accepting freshman enrollment according to available space.

Ball State's recent marketing efforts and higher admission standards have contributed to the rise in freshman enrollment which has caused more of an awareness of Ball State as a quality university, McConkey said.

"We have set $3,700 as a target for the freshmen, but the number of students who have applied and the number who have paid their deposits have risen significantly," McConkey said in a news release.

McConkey said housing and availability of classes are the two large concerns with the hiking enrollment.

"We are giving priority for the university housing to the incoming students," McConkey said. "Returning students who plan to, but have not yet signed a housing contract for next year also better move quickly or they may have to find off-campus housing."

According to a news release, Housing and Residence Life may allow transfer students to live in Scheidler Apartments if the number of applicants is too high to accommodate in the dorms.222. <>freshmen enrollment DNEditorial
