Nowak, Riley compete in championships

Two Ball State track and field athletes are in Louisiana until June 1 for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Junior Katie Nowak and senior Zach Riley traveled to Baton Rouge, La. Wednesday. The competition concludes Saturday.

Nowak and Riley are two of 11 athletes from the Mid-American Conference to compete.

Nowak qualified for the championships May 4 at Stanford by posting a 16:15.29 in the 5,000-meter race in the Cardinal Invitational, which was a new Ball State school record.

Riley won his third straight Mid-American Conference Championship in the hammer throw in the 2002 season. His throw at Indiana of 215-11 feet was a Ball State outdoor school record and a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

The NCAA Championships is at Bernie Moore Stadium, located at Louisiana State University.
