Ball State senior to box world ranked boxer

Telecommunications major Kristi Follmar will face Mia St. John Sunday night.

A ball state senior found out Tuesday that she will be fighting a world ranked boxer Saturday night.

Kristi Follmar, a 21 year old Telecommunications major will be traveling to Choctaw, Miss. to fight at the Silver Star Hotel and Casino. The bout is set for four rounds. The fight will be televised at 7 p.m. Sunday on Fox Sports.

"I'm pretty nervous," Follmar said. "This is a big chance to get noticed."

Follmar will be facing Mia St. John. Her record is 24-1 and is currently ranked 19th in the world.

St. John got her start when she sent a modeling picture to Don King. He then signed her and she began her professional career in her late 20s. She is also known for posing in Playboy as well.

Follmar's coach, Mark Limmrick received the call and got all the information about the fight Tuesday night.

"I think Kristi has the capability of winning," Limmrick said. "I think it's a great opportunity."

Follmar's professional record is 2-0 and amateur record was 7-1. She won the Golden Gloves in 2000 and 2001 and went professional in January.

"Kristi is a polished boxer, a real good fighter and a hard hitter," boxer Al Hughes said.

Follmar continued training at the Police Athletic League club regularly just in case a situation like this would arise.

"In boxing you never know when you're going to have a fight," Follmar said. "I'm going to start preparing mentally."

The referee had to stop both of Follmar's first two professional fights in the first round because her opponents could not continue.

She said that she wants to size St. John up before actually getting fully involved into the fight.

"I would like to stop the fight early because I'm the underdog," Follmar said.

Follmar will finish her training today and relax tomorrow until fight time.
