Weekend win sets tone for MAC

Cardinals bounce back from loss to Falcons.

Head coach Bill Richards said there were two ways the men's tennis team could have rebounded from its first Mid-American Conference loss of the season to Bowling Green last Wednesday.

The team could bounce back and play aggressive tennis, or it could feel sorry for itself and play down to the level of its next opponent.

With a first-round tournament bye in jeopardy, the Cardinals (11-13 overall, 4-1 MAC) defeated a University at Buffalo team that is winless in the MAC, 7-0.

"It was a matter of taking care of business and just beating a team you're supposed to," Richards said.

Richards said he was pleased with the way the Cards rebounded from the disheartening loss to Bowling Green - which knocked them from the top spot in the league. He said the Cards have shifted gears to prepare for next weekend's league tournament.

The Cardinals quickly took care of business as the three doubles teams won virtually unchallenged. Singles play saw more unchallenged matches for the Cards as the team swept singles play, led by 6-1, 6-1 victories by junior Chris Varga at No. 2 and freshman Matt Laramore at No. 5.

"We definitely feel better about ourselves," Richards said. "We have different guys and different levels of confidence, but it was nice to see everyone rebound."

Nonetheless, the two seniors on the team, Jason Pressel and Andrew Seni, were the only Cardinals to have a close match as they each were forced into tie-breakers in the second set of their matches.

Richards said the duo is going to have to raise the level of their games going into the MAC Tournament if the team is going to reach its potential.

"When Jason and Andrew are on the top of their games, the team responds positively," Richards said. "I really feel our outcome in the tournament is going to ride on the performance of our seniors."
