Village restaurant may open in June

Roly Poly specializes in rolled sandwiches in tortilla shells.

A new face could soon roll into the Village.

Roly Poly, a restaurant chain founded in Westport, Conn., is expected to open in June at 1712 W. University Ave. next door to the Blue Bottle Coffee Shop.

The chain specializes in rolled sandwiches enveloped in flour tortilla shells. The cold wrap sandwiches include turkey, ham, roast beef, pork, chicken, seafood or vegetarian items.

The sandwiches can be served either hot or cold.

According to Tom Coyle, CEO of Roly Poly, the restaurant chain has had much success in Glendale, Keystone, Carmel and near Purdue's campus in West Lafayette.

"We are in a fast growth stage," Coyle said. "Currently we will open one store per week in Indiana. The franchise in West Lafayette has been our top-volume seller throughout the country."

Because of the Indiana stores' successes, Coyle said Roly Poly will focus on establishing eateries near more campuses.

"We found a great location (at the Village) and took advantage of it," Coyle said.

The Village is not new terrain for Roly Poly's owner Bill Church. Church attended Ball State in the late 1980s.

"We are very happy to be in (the Muncie) area," Church said. "We plan to offer a good product at a fair price with a fun atmosphere.

"We have a healthy, quick, convenient and fun atmosphere," Church said.

Church said the employees' shirts - with the saying, "Let us roll you a fat one," on the back - also add to atmosphere.

Currently Roly Poly is in the letter of intent stage of the negotiations with the building's owner, Jesse Shrieve of Network Property Services.

In this phase, representatives from Roly Poly and Shrieve will discuss the specific floor plans and other details about the restaurant.

"We are in the process of finishing the lease right now," Church said. "We hope to be moved in sometime mid-summer. That way we can get prepared for the fall when most of the students come back."

Roly Poly will begin the hiring process during the first week of June. Coyle said.
